Resorts World Casino New York City announced a $50,000 grant to the Queens Economic Development Corporation (QEDC) to fund their StartUP! Business Plan Competition, a competition which aims to support entrepreneurship in Queens.

The partnership was announced at QEDC’s Queens Taste 2017, a fundraiser held at the New York Hall of Science in Corona.

“Resorts World Casino New York City is honored to join QEDC to support small business owners in Queens,” said Michelle Stoddart, director of PR and community development at Resorts World Casino New York City. “The StartUP! Business Plan Competition will enable local entrepreneurs to access new tools and resources to continue to innovate in the booming Queens economy.”

Participants in the entrepreneurship competition will attend training classes and then submit a business plan to be judged by a panel for a chance to win funding for their business.

Contestants can compete in one of three categories: community, food-based, or innovation. Eligible businesses must be startups currently based in Queens and winners can receive a grant of up to $10,000.

The competition begins in August and ends in March.

St. Stan’s in Ozone Park to receive CYO Sportsmanship Award

The St. Stan’s (Ozone Park) CYO basketball program has been chosen to receive this year’s CYO Parish Sportsmanship Award.

“It is a great honor and tribute to the dedication and standards set by our PAR Joe Bode,” said Athletic Directors, Jimmy Cooke & Kathleen Jordan McDonald.

“We would like to extend a huge thank you to our coaches: Carlos ‘Los Man’ Cervantes, CJ Cooke, Rudy Peña, Joseph Bode, Dominick Phil Hughes Santoro, Billy Hofmann, along with our parents and players!” said Bode.

The award will be presented at the CYO hall of fame dinner on June 2nd.

Southeast Queens to host Family Resource Expo

Elected officials in southeast Queens are hosting a Family Resource Expo at CUNY York College on Saturday, May 6.

The expo will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the York College Atrium, located at 94-20 Guy R. Brewer Blvd. in Jamaica.

State Senator Leroy Comrie, Assemblywoman Alicia Hyndman, Assemblyman Clyde Vanel and Councilman I. Daneek Miller are hosts of the event. Guest speakers include Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina, Queens Library CEO Dennis Walcott and New York State Regents member Dr. Lester W. Young, Jr..

Dozens of local and state agencies and community organizations will also be in attendance to provide information and resources for local residents.

Teen arrested for sexual assault in Rosedale

Police have arrested a 15-year-old boy for allegedly attempting rape, burglary and aggravated sex abuse.

Detectives from the NYPD Special Victims Division are investigating a reported sexual assault of a 4-year-old girl inside her home on Francis Lewis Boulevard in Rosedale.

Police say it happened in the early morning hours of April 30th.

An initial investigation indicates that the suspect may have used a ladder to access the girl’s window on her second-floor apartment.

The investigation remains ongoing. The boy was arrested Tuesday at 2:30 a.m.

The Truth & The Press in the Trump Administration

The Queens County Young Democrats are hosting a talk called “The Truth & The Press in the Trump Administration” on Thursday, May 11 at 7 p.m.

The event will be hosted at the Latin American Intercultural Alliance at 148-15 Archer Avenue in Jamaica.

QCYD will discuss the state of truth in the country, the strength of the press and how to keep truth alive.

It will feature a panel of experts to discuss how truth and the press impacts American democracy.

Resorts World hosts blood drive

Resorts World Casino New York City recently hosted a blood drive in partnership with the American Red Cross last Thursday.

The blood drive was held on the Times Square Casino Level in the corridor leading to the MTA skybridge. During the blood drive, Resorts World collected well over 24 pints of blood at the drive.

The American Red Cross supplies approximately 40% of the nation’s blood in addition to providing essential services to victims of disasters inducing shelter, food, water, and support. All participants who donated blood received a free spin on the raffle wheel for a chance to win a variety of prizes including Resorts World gift certificates and apparel.

Victim loses phone, credit card in swift theft

That’s why you don’t leave your belongings unattended.

Police are looking for a man, pictured above, who stole a number of items from a woman inside Resorts World Casino.

On March 19, a 62-year-old woman reported losing her cell phone, debit card, insurance card and driver’s license after placing it down and leaving the location.

The suspect took the items and left the area. Luckily, his image was caught on surveillance video.

Volunteers to repair homes in Jamaica

Rebuilding Together NYC is bringing hundreds of volunteers to Allen Senior Center in Jamaica on Saturday, April 29 as part of National Rebuilding Day.

Volunteers will help repair five homes and two community centers. They’ll also install 25 lights to increase public safety in the neighborhood.

Their work includes installing new flooring, drywall and electrical repairs.

The event is sponsored by Guineans Association for Development, NY State Affordable Housing Corporation, Shawmut Design and Construction, Sandow, Gilbane Building Company, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati and the Home Depot Foundation.

Resorts World Casino New York City (RWCNYC) will host a blood drive in partnership with the American Red Cross on April 20 from 12 – 5 p.m.

The blood drive will be held on the Times Square Casino Level in the corridor leading to the MTA skybridge. All are invited to participate and can schedule an appointment by visiting redcrossblood.org and entering the zip code 11420. All walk-ins are welcome.

The American Red Cross supplies approximately 40% of the nation’s blood in addition to providing essential services to victims of disasters inducing shelter, food, water, and support. All participants to donate blood will get a free spin on the raffle wheel for a chance to win a variety of prizes including RWCNYC gift certificates and official RWCNYC apparel. Resorts World hopes to collect 24 pints of blood at the drive.

Participants must be at least 18 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health!

TONIGHT: South Ozone Park Civic Association West Meeting

Members of the South Ozone Park Civic Association are meeting tonight at St. Anthony of Padua Church Hall near 135th Avenue and 128th Street.

The meeting will run from 7 to 9 p.m.

Part of the meeting will be dedicated to electing a new board to run the civic organization.

Advocates of the QueensRail plan to restore the old Long Island Railroad (LIRR) line will also present at the meeting.

The local police precinct and Resorts World Casino will both give updates to local residents.
