Elected officials in southeast Queens are hosting a forum about the upcoming vote on a New York State Constitution Convention.

On November 7th, Election Day, New York voters will decide whether or not to have a “Con-Con,” a once-in-20-years opportunity to open up the New York State Constitution and implement changes.

“It is important to educate our communities on what a constitutional convention is and how it could affect their lives in New York State,” said Assemblywoman Alicia Hyndman. “Many New Yorkers may not be aware of this important ballot referendum and the impact this may have on key issues affecting their employment, pensions and their families.”

The forum will feature a panel from leaders in labor, law and academia, who will discuss what’s at stake.

Labor unions have banded together to strongly oppose the Con-Con, fearing that strong labor protections will be stripped away. Some good government and progressive groups are in favor, believing it’s a chance to enact important state reforms that would not otherwise pass the Republican-controlled State Senate.

The forum will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Robert Ross-Johnson Family Life Center in Jamaica.

State Senator Joseph Addabbo is teaming up with Resorts World Casino New York City for his annual job fair on Friday, October 6th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

More than 120 different employers will be represented at the job fair, including private companies, government agencies, nonprofits, retailers and others.

Job seekers should bring resumes and take advantage of every opportunity to speak directly with companies and organizations.

“One of the best parts of my job as an elected official is helping my unemployed constituents find jobs and providing others with the opportunity to check out different work opportunities,” Addabbo said.

The job fair is free and open to the public.

A Jamaica clinic will be renovated and renamed after the former first lady of New York, and mother of the current governor, Matilda Raffa Cuomo.

Brightpoint Health, a nonprofit healthcare provider, decided to honor Cuomo’s legacy of charitable and humanitarian efforts. She helped found the organization.

The health center will offer integrated behavioral health and primary care services to address mental health and substance abuse issues. The clinic currently serves over 60,000 patients and clients.

The expanded center includes an additional 3,000 square feet.

“My mother has dedicated her life to helping the less fortunate and uplifting New Yorkers in need, and I applaud the renaming of this facility to honor her long career of service,” said Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Beginning this Friday, the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) will hold monthly office hours inside Queens Borough Hall.

City officials will begin to provide residents easier access to information and services for the Queens immigrant community.

“Nearly half of our borough’s 2.3 million people were born abroad, and their many contributions to our community are a source of strength and a vital part of the Queens identity,” said Borough President Melinda Katz. “More immigrants and more DACA-eligible immigrants call Queens home than any other borough, and in this increasingly uncertain climate, we want immigrant families to know that New York has their backs.”

The upcoming deadline for enrollment renewals for DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) program is on October 5.

According to the Migration Policy Institute, approximately 28,000 DACA-eligible immigrants live in Queens.

The MOIA team will be in Borough Hall the last Friday of every month. Residents can meet with representatives one-on-one between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

No appointments are necessary and walk-ins are welcome.

“In the world’s borough, where nearly half of all residents are immigrants, holding monthly office hours at Queens Borough Hall will allow MOIA to be even more accessible to Queens residents,” said Bitta Mostofi, acting commissioner for MOIA. “Immigration status should not be a barrier to accessing resources, and through our legal services programs, IDNYC, access to Know Your Rights forums, among other resources, Mayor de Blasio’s administration is working every day to make New York City a more inclusive city for all.”

City Council candidate and Community Board 12 chair Adrienne Adams emerged victorious in the Democratic primary for City Council.

Adams, backed by county leaders, collected 3,341 votes, representing 38.81 percent, according to the Board of Elections.

Two other candidates, Richard David and Hettie Powell, took home 2,763 votes (32 percent) and 2,483 votes (28 percent), respectively.

All three were vying for the seat vacated by former Councilman Ruben Wills, who was found guilty of public corruption and kicked out of the City Council.

The 28th Council District includes parts of Richmond Hill, Rochdale, South Ozone Park and Jamaica.

Now the race goes to the general election, where the Democratic candidate is almost guaranteed a victory because Democrats outnumber Republicans in the district.

That will likely make Adrienne Adams your next City Council member.

Elected officials representing all parts of southeast Queens kicked off the 15th annual Senior Appreciation Month last week in Jamaica.

They announced a calendar of shows, events and cultural experiences hosted through their offices throughout the month, including a Gospel Fest, bowling and a comedy show.

“These older men and women created the communities we all enjoy to live in and I am pleased to be able to work with my colleagues in government to support the quality of life they so deserve,” said Councilman I. Daneek Miller. “This month, our seniors will have the opportunity to socialize, exercise and be entertained with music and comedy.”

Other officials who will participate in the month include Congressman Gregory Meeks, Councilman Barry Grodenchik, Councilman Rory Lancman, State Senator Leroy Comrie, State Senator James Sanders, Assemblywoman Vivian Cook, Assemblywoman Alicia Hyndman, Assemblyman Clyde Vanel, and Assemblyman David Weprin.

Elected officials are investing more than $2 million in capital upgrades for Queens firehouses, including $500,000 for a Jamaica station.

Borough President Melinda Katz, Councilman Paul Vallone, the FDNY and Community Board 7 announced that $2.075 million has been allocated for the next fiscal year.

“Firehouses hold New York’s Bravest, our heroes who fearlessly run toward danger and crisis when everyone else runs away,” Katz said. “Firehouses are the pillars of the neighborhood, where Queens families turn to for safety and rescue at our most vulnerable hours.”

“We owe an immeasurable debt to our firefighters and first responders,” added Vallone. “The best fire department in the world deserves the best in return.”

“This funding will go a long way to improving these firehouses and is a shining example of what can be accomplished by partnering with our fellow elected officials.”
