Yesterday’s general election offered few surprising outcomes, and that’s exactly the case in southeast Queens, where incumbents fended off challengers.

The closest race was in District 32, between incumbent Eric Ulrich and challenger Mike Scala.

Ulrich, the borough’s lone Republican in the City Council (for now, anyway), won 14,862 of 22,621 votes, roughly 65.7 percent, according to unofficial results from the BOE.

Ulrich’s most notable achievement was passing legislation to create a new city Department of Veterans Services. He represents an independent voice for the more conservative area of Queens.

Scala, a transportation advocate and former political aide, won 7,715 votes, or 34.11 percent.

The race got nasty, with accusations of racism and misogyny thrown at the challenger. Ulrich’s camp unearthed old videos of Scala’s rap career that gave him a bad look.

In the 27th Council District, incumbent I. Daneek Miller dispatched his two challengers, Republican Rupert Green and Green Party candidate Frank Francois.

According to early returns, Miller took 94.97 percent of the vote. He will serve four more years in the City Council.

In the 31st District, incumbent Donovan Richards ran unopposed, though there were 228 write-ins. Richards will now focus on the speaker’s race, of which he is a candidate.

In the 28th District, Democrat Adrienne Adams cruised to victory over Republican Ivan Mossop Jr. and Working Families candidate (and former Democratic foe) Hettie Powell. Adams carried 86 percent last night.

She will begin a new term representing the district formerly held by disgraced ex-councilman Ruben Wills.

There will be a shopping Extravaganza at the Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral of New York on Saturday, November 4.
This free event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Attendees will find pre-holiday shopping for women, children and men. Food can also be purchased from The New York Club in the Soul Cafe.

It’s (finally) fall again, so you know what that means. Fall leaf collection is back!

The Department of Sanitation is turning your leaves into compost for New York City’s street trees and community gardens, rather than letting the leaves rot in a landfill. Did we mention that’s not the best for the environment?

Certain neighborhoods across the city will receive special DSNY leaf collection services, including Community Boards 12 and 13 in southeast Queens.

Leaves can be set out in either a part lawn and leaf bag (see above) or in an open, unlined container. Please don’t use plastic bags!

Collection will be after 4 p.m. on these days:

• Saturday, November 18
• Saturday, December 2

Stop by one of his mobile office hours on Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

He’s already made pit stops at libraries in Queens Village, Laurelton and South Hollis. His next open office hours are at South Jamaica Library, located at 108-41 Guy R. Brewer Boulevard.

“My primary purpose as an elected representative is to bring information, assistance and public resources to the families of my community,” Comrie said. “I realize that not everyone is able to take the time off from work or school to stop by my office during the week. It’s my hope that weekend hours at library locations across Southeast Queens will give more individuals the opportunity to connect with us.”

Shane Pomeroy, representing Resorts World Casino, presented a $10,000 donation to the Queens Council of the Boy Scouts of America Wednesday morning. The Boy Scouts, who recently announced they will now be accepting girls into their traditional scouting programs, held a board meeting at Resorts World Casino, where they also spoke about their progressive merit badge programs.

In teaming up with local firms and organizations, scouts now have the option of gaining merit badges at organizations that specialize in those crafts. Vaughn College was one of the early organizations to become involved by holding classes on aviation, giving scouts the opportunity to earn the Aviation Merit Badge. The Merit Badge Pro Series has scouts working with the Museum of Moving Image for movie-making as well as for game design at Two Moos. Participants can earn the Welding Merit Badge at the Metal Workshop Fantasy on Saturday, November 18.

Last week, elected officials joined the Department of Transportation (DOT) to celebrate the final resurfacing of Jamaica Avenue between 168th Street and Francis Lewis Boulevard.

The smooth road now eliminates defects caused by routine wear-and-tear that both damages vehicles and risks pedestrians’ safety.

This stretch on Jamaica Avenue was last repaved more than 25 years ago.

“Years of neglect forced consumers and suppliers to use this crucial artery under hazardous conditions that detracted from the economic growth of local businesses and left pedestrians prone to injury,” said Councilman I. Daneek Miller. “This repaving underscores the public recognition that Jamaica’s appeal extends beyond the boundaries of southeast Queens to all of our city’s residents.”

Queens DOT Commissioner Nicole Garcia added that the agency also improved safety around schools by installing concrete islands to shorten crossings, adding new pedestrian signals and fixing and replacing sidewalks, curbs and pedestrian ramps.

According to Miller’s office, the stretch spans 12.74 total lane miles, or 2.2 miles, including traffic lanes and a parking lane.

Nearly 100 corner pedestrian ramps were repairs and more than 19,000 square feet of sidewalk was replaced.

Queens Borough President Melinda Katz’s office is now accepting applications for internships for fall 2017, spring 2018 and summer 2018.

College and high school students who have an interest in public service are encouraged to apply.

The positions are unpaid, so they’re real for current students seeking academic credits and/or experience.

Interns will work with policymakers and rotate to different policy areas, staff the BP for meetings and events, attend press conferences, grand opening and concerts, and assist the office in other ways.

The 14th annual Global Cuisine of Queens tasting event is set for Wednesday, October 18th at 6 p.m.

The event is an annual collaboration between Resorts World Casino NYC and the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Queens.

It celebrates the diversity of the borough, its people and its cultures. More than 30 restaurants, caterers, bakeries and wineries from throughout the city will participate.

Attendees can sample appetizers, desserts and specialty drinks.

The event will also feature a two-hour NYPD and FDNY chili cook-off.

Global Cuisine of Queens benefits the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Queens and its programs, which help at-risk youth become leaders in their communities.

State Senator Leroy Comrie is teaming up with the Lower East Side Ecology Center to host an all-day free electronics waste collection event in St. Albans this Saturday.

In January 2015, the final phase of the New York State Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act took effect, making it illegal for people to dispose of electronics in solid waste management facilities, or to place it curbside for collection.

Those who fail to comply may face fines.

To address that issue, organizations like Lower East Side Ecology Center are hosting e-waste collection events for residents to drop off their computers, monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards, mice, cables, TVs, VCRs, DVD players, phones and audio/visual equipment.

The event will be at St. Alban Episcopal Church from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
