South Ozone Park street named for teen who died of rare condition

DSC_0444

A portion of 110th Street in South Ozone Park will forever honor the life of the late Qadri Skipper, a resident who died in 2012 from two rare medical conditions.

On Tuesday, Councilman Ruben Wills, was joined by Qadri’s family and friends as well as other local leaders to pay tribute to the late teen.

“Qadri’s name means Under God’s Control and Meaningful Purpose,” said Doreen Blair-Skipper, a family member. “At a young age, he displayed strength through adversity well beyond his years, but always with a positive attitude and compassion for others.”

“I am proud to have been chosen to care for him because his life continues to have Meaningful Purpose: by raising awareness about the rare conditions of Pulmonary Hypertension and Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia,” she added. “I am honored to pay tribute to Q, and thank Councilman Ruben Wills for helping to make this commemorative ceremony possible; as well as everyone who was involved in Qadri’s care, education and emotional and spiritual support.”

When he was a senior at Information Technology High School, Qadri lost his battle to Primary Pulmonary Hypertension (1 in 1,000,000 people) and Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (1 in 5,000 people).

Queens Village resident leads DDC project

Vanessa Galvez, a 26-year-old Queens Village resident and resident engineer at the Department of Design and Construction (DDC), is currently leading a project to install 164 bioswales in Maspeth.

Bioswales are natural areas located near stormwater catch basins that use extremely porous soil and specific plants to absorb and divert stormwater from filling up city sewers and ultimately, our streets.

“Instead of letting runoff flow into our storm sewers or ponds, or create floods, the bioswales will be collecting the water to saturate the soil, to water the plants and the trees. It will beautify the neighborhood and disperse and clean the water to an extent,” Galvez said. “I take pride in bioswales. If I’m driving around with my family, I’ll say, ‘Oh look! I built that!’ At first you look at it and it just looks like a tree pit, but once you look at all the specs, all the standards, you realize it’s helping the city.”

Galvez, a alumna of NYU’s Tandon School of Engineering, joined DDC in 2012. Her first day on the job was the same day that Superstorm Sandy struck.

Her family comes from El Salvador. When she visited her parents’ home country as a 12 year old, she noticed children playing with dirty water on the streets of the city. A graduate of Thomas Edison High School in Jamaica, Galvez said her interest in mechanical engineering percolated after watching a documentary about the environmental failures in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina.

“Looking back on it now, they could have built a simple filter out of rocks,” she said about her trip to El Salvador. “Maybe it wouldn’t have cleaned the water enough to drink it, but it might have exposed the kids to a bit more cleanliness. The way we function impacts the cleanliness of the environment. It’s all related.”

Galvez said the installation of 164 bioswales in Maspeth should be completed by the winter. The $3.8 million project will also include new sidewalks and curbs.

TOMORROW: Walk for Wellness!

Knicks legend John Starks will join elected officials in Southeast Queens to take part in the second Walk for Wellness this Saturday.

Starting at 8:30 a.m. at Roy Wilkins Park (Merrick Blvd and Foch Blvd), residents will walk to put the community back on a track to a healthy lifestyle.

In Southeast Queens, one in four adults get no physical exercise, and one in five are obese. Being overweight increases risks for heart diseases and other problems, especially diabetes. According to officials, 10 percent of adults in Southeast Queens suffer from diabetes, which is above the city average of 8 percent.

If not for the health, come for the free giveaways, which will be given to every participant.

Former mayor endorses Adams for State Senate

Dinkins Endorses Adams

Former New York City Mayor David Dinkins has formally endorsed Adrienne Adams, currently the chair of Community Board 12 and a candidate for the State Senate.

The senate district includes Richmond Hill, South Ozone Park, Jamaica, Rochdale Village, Rosedale and parts of Far Rockaway. The Democratic Primary will be on Tuesday, September 13.

Dinkins, the city’s only African American mayor, said Adams has worked tirelessly for her community for years.

“She has always fought hard to better our schools, help our seniors and improve our quality of life,” Dinkins said. “She is a trusted leader that Southeast Queens and the Rockaways need.”

In return Adams called Dinkins an “important figure in our city’s history.” She credited him for driving down crime, improving quality of life and preserving affordable housing.

Dinkins’s endorsement adds to a long list of establishment support that Adams has received, including endorsements from Rev. Floyd Flake, Congressman Gregory Meeks and the Queens County Democratic Committee.
